Two words: tropical paradise. Qunci Villas is one of the best-rated hotels in Lombok and there are a number of reasons for this: the grounds are gorgeous, the pool is to die for and the staff make everything so damn easy for you. First impressions can be simplified to lots of lush greenery, inviting water, a warm greeting and lovely rooms…what more can you ask for.
Designed by Dutch architect Joost Van Grieken, what your eyes first notice at Qunci is nothing but tropical luxury. The villas themselves are fairly simple in design, with cream tiled floors and wooden accents and a distinct impression that frills have been kept to a minimum. The mostly neutral palette, however, is not unpleasant, given all of the villas either look out to garden or ocean views, so there is more than enough colour and vibrance so that a simpler room doesn’t feel lacking. The rooms have really been designed to reflect the beautiful natural surroundings, whether that’s the ocean or the resort’s landscaping. The highlight for me, though, is the outside bathroom, which is particularly large, with the shower in the open air and surrounding smooth pebble stones making for a seriously tropical experience. Even if only because it’s a novelty, it works very well in the surroundings. I also must mention the use of local art in all of the rooms, which gives a lovely, personal feel to the resort and brightens up the interiors immensely.
For a lot more luxury you can opt for one of the pool villas, which have a much stronger Indonesian-feeling interior, with the luxe element overall significantly amped up. There is the option of a one, two or three bedroom villa, and although the first two are gorgeous, if you really want to go premium there is no looking past Villa Qusia. The three-bedroom villa is on a spacious private property on the hill above the hotel to take in the gorgeous view of Bali’s Mt.Gunung Agung and the Lombok Sea. With some of the world’s best sunsets happening right here on Lombok, you would have the perfect vantage point from Villa Qusia. As for the 25-meter infinity pool? Well, that’s just the icing on the cake.
Qunci lends itself to comfort easily, due to its relaxed, natural surroundings and the simplicity of the rooms making you feel as though you are in a home away from home. However, five-star travellers should be aware that Lombok is a Muslim island and the Call to Prayer at 4am every morning could deter you if you’re not a deep sleeper, or just don’t know to expect it! An easy solution is to request a room close to the pool / ocean. I recommend the Ocean View or Part Ocean View rooms. You have more privacy than the garden view rooms, being on the upper level, and it’s a gorgeous feeling sitting on the balcony overlooking the stunning grounds and pool below, and ocean in front of you.
The pools at Qunci are one of the best things about the resort. They are pristine, perfect and completely seductive. It’s commonplace at Qunci to spend your entire stay by the pool, because, well, why wouldn’t you? You can always manage to get a sun lounger here and the pools are literally right on the water so you are surrounded by beauty at every angle. You can even put your orders in at the bar from your lounger which tops off the whole relaxing experience.
There is a lovely on-site spa at Qunci that offers good treatments for a reasonable price. The staff go to a lot of trouble to make you feel pampered and for the couples treatments, go all out with access to a private outdoor shower and bath after your treatment.
The staff at Qunci will go out of their way for you. They are happy to arrange any day trip to the nearby Gili islands and will assist with anything else you can think of. When we checked into our room and expressed that we wanted more privacy, the staff were happy to change us to the next available upstairs room, the following day for the remainder of our stay. As the management themselves say in replying to each and every Trip Advisor review, “all you have to do is ask”.
There are two restaurants and a separate bar at the resort. The bar is in a gorgeous spot for admiring the breathtaking sunsets, and they serve a decent cocktail too. Guests get a complimentary breakfast each morning and have the choice of either restaurant to sit at, including the tables that are literally on the beach. The food is tasty and well-portioned, although a little too Western perhaps for the seasoned traveller who enjoys embedding themselves in the culture’s culinary delicacies.
Qunci has regular events and themed nights where you can pay a little more and have a seafood buffet, for example, and the variety and thought that goes into these is what makes Qunci really quite special. The hotel also offers romantic candlelit dinners on the beach and in the cabanas near the beach which they dress up so beautifully even I was tempted to book one. You won’t get Michelin star cuisine at Qunci but you’ll get a satisfying and tasty meal for a dime versus a buck in an absolutely stunning setting.
Qunci Villas is located about a 15 minute drive from the closest town where there are plenty of restaurants and more things to do if lying by the pool isn’t really your thing (but I doubt this). Many people go to Lombok as a stepping-stone to the Gilis, but Lombok has plenty to offer all on its own in the form of beaches, natural waterfalls, temples. For the more adventurous, you can do the trek up the famous Mount Rinjani, the second-highest mountain in Indonesia. Book your stay at Qunci Villas here
The kind of holiday where you arrive, unpack, and don’t leave until check-out. Qunci is a little bubble of beauty and tranquility and is the ideal spot to escape, stay put and unwind.
